Conor Harrington, Shoredtich

A former graffiti artist, Conor Harrington hails from Cork in the Republic of Ireland. He still paints outdoor murals worldwide to considerable acclaim, including on the Belfast ends-of-terraces once employed to spread the propaganda of Northern Ireland’s sectarian movements.

Conor’s paintings fuse realist figurative work with abstractions taken from the graffiti scene that nurtured his talents. He is a central figure within a new breed of young artists tackling sociopolitical themes using fine art techniques in a context formerly reserved for street artists.

Where Conor’s early works concerned the conflicts within modern masculine identity, his recent paintings have used contemporary models in historical settings. The 2008 exhibition Weekend Warriors profiled military reenactment enthusiasts. 2012’s startling Dead Meat showed glamour girls and alternative male fashion models in a sybaritic feast representing the final days of Western power.

Conor Harrington works from his studio in east London.
